Although some very expensive custom made Remy hair wigs may have hair from a single donor, most Remy hair, used by the better wig manufacturers of Remy wigs, is gathered from multiple sources. The hair is collected and then sorted so all the roots of the hair are together flowing towards the tips of the hair. By having all the hair strands lay in the same direction, the hairs’ cuticles remain undisturbed so they do not tangle.
The outer most layer of a strand of hair is referred to the “cuticle”. It is a hard shingle-like layer of overlapping cells that form scales giving the hair shaft strength and acting as a protective barrier. The hair cuticle is the first line of defense against all forms of hair damage. In addition the cuticle provides much of the shine that makes healthy human hair so attractive.
The result is a Remy wig with human hair that falls better, lasts longer, and looks the most natural. The process of properly sorting the hair is laborious and time consuming. In general, Remy hair has a smoother, shinier, and healthier appearance than regular human hair. When washed, it will not mat and tangle. It has not been chemically processed. The result is a luscious looking wig at a higher price. Many women consider a Remy wig well worth the cost.
It use to be that the color of a Remy wig was the actual color of the original hair. Unlike regular human hair, Remy hair originally was not really processed. However with new technologies the Certified Authentic 100% Remy human hair from Raquel Welch is able to be de-colored without damaging the cuticle of the hair strand. The proprietory non-toxic process uses no harmful bleach or amonia and is environmentally safe. The Remy hair is de-pigmented over a 15-20 day period using a patented osmosis process, which lifts the color from the inside of the hair, rather than opening and damaging the hair's cuticle. The Raquel Welch Remy hair process results in color-fast, fade resistant, soft hair.
Non-Remy Human Hair
Non-Remy hair is usually referred to as just human hair. It too has been gathered from multiple sources. However, it is not tediously sorted to assure that the roots and tips of all the hair shafts travel in the same direction. Consequently, the outer most layer of the hair shaft, the cuticle, must be removed through a chemical process to prevent the hair strands from tangling and matting once they are made into a wig. In addition, before the wig process can begin, the hair strands need a silicone or similar treatment to give the hair a faux shine and smooth appearance. Non-Remy hair may also undergo some sort of chemical processing in order to achieve another color than its original color.
Quality human hair wigs, whether they are made from non-Remy or Remy human hair, are a worthy investment for the wig-wearer searching for a product that looks real and feels natural. However, Remy human hair wigs feature a grade of hair that is better than a regular human hair wig because it is silkier to the touch and tangles less. However, Remy hair wigs are more expensive.
